Hyderabad: Mahabubabad MP P Balram Naik has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act , 1960. The MP emphasised the urgent need to table the new Animal Welfare (Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Bill in the current session of Parliament. The letter outlined need to increase penalty for crimes against animals.
The maximum fine for crime against animals, including beating, poisoning, raping or burning, is a mere 50 (and 100 for repeat offenders).
Mousumi Gupta, director of government affairs, Humane Society International India, said: “Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, is outdated and inadequate in addressing severity of crimes against animals.” tnn
